MFW how to: Guido and Redken for Versace
After a parade of contemporary girls, the supers closed the show walking to George Michael’s “Freedom! ’90”, which was definitely a moment. The song holds a special significance for Redken Global Creative Director Guido Palau. He styled hair for the iconic music video, which also featured a killer line up of ’90s supermodels and went on to make pop-culture history. Palau even credits the experience as having launched his legendary hairstyling career, which is no mean feat! “Everything about it was an amazing experience and it really took me to another level in my career,” he said. “I’m very proud of what it is and what it has become in people’s eyes… it’s nice to be a part of something that means a lot to people.”
Palau was a long time collaborator of Gianni’s and stepped right up when Donatella took over the house, now having worked with her on countless Versace shows over the years. “It was very emotional for Donatella and for everyone,” said Guido. “She’s very passionate about her work. I admire that about her. I’ve worked with her for over 20 years and with Gianni.”
To create the finale hairstyles for the supermodels this season, Palau stayed true to their respective signature looks, while giving a nod to the ’90s-with-a-twist beauty that feels so current right now. “I wanted to take their ‘iconic-’ness’ and bring it into the now,” he said.
He prepped the hair with Redken’s amazing Pillow Proof Blow Dry Primer Spray (one of my personal must haves) for heat protection, then applied Guts 10 volume spray foam. The mousse added ’90s-inspired volume and hold, with a thoroughly modern formula that won’t leave hair stiff or sticky. To finish, he expertly blow-dried the hair using a round brush, then lightly sprayed on Shine Flash 02 glistening mist and Fashion Work 12 versatile hairspray for shine and hold.
The end result? Pure fabulousness, and then some. OBSESSED.
