Beauty review: Kosas The Big Clean Longwear Volumizing + Lash Care Mascara

I have heard time and time again how hard it is to get a ‘clean’ mascara right, and every formulator I’ve ever interviewed has said it’s rarer than a unicorn. Having said, some brands have created some pretty great formulas, and Kosas’s The Big Clean Longwear Volumizing + Lash Care Mascara (which took 104 iterations to get right) was an early favourite of mine. And now it appears that one of the best… just got even better.
The Big Clean Mascara initially launched in 2020 and gained instant attraction for its hybrid mascara-serum formula, but one complaint the brand heard consistently during launch was how quickly it would smudge off and under the eye area. This led Kosas on a journey to discover how to create a clean smudge-proof mascara without the typical “film formers” like acrylate copolymers (a common microplastic). Where the brand landed was with a new innovative formula with biodegradable plant-based sugars that acted as a natural binder, these sugars also help to create a thicker, fuller look – genius!
Newly reformulated to wear for 12 hours - while staying 100 per cent true to their highest standards for clean – the new formula is a game changer, and I absolutely love it. It is suitable for even the most sensitive of eyes (like mine), and delivers maximum volume and separation with the cleanest ingredients.

The oversized rainbow brush delivers a pumped-up effect, with natural body-building ingredients and pure, intense pigments equalling a big lash vibe. The curved brush has flexible-yet-firm spiralled bristles that volumise, lengthen, separate, and curl lashes all the way up, and it’s also super easy to wield. For the ultimate lash lift look, I like to press the brush into the base of my lashes and wiggle it though, with the curve of the brush following the natural curve of the eye. I layer as I go, and amazingly, this formula is entirely clump-less, love that! And yep, it still comes with hair care serum for clinically proven results, nourishing and protecting to support stronger, healthier lashes over time.
