Beauty news: CeraVe arrives in New Zealand
Sensitive and dry skin types rejoice: the cult American skincare brand, CeraVe is now available in New Zealand. Recommended by aestheticians and derms in its country of birth for years now, beauty freaks have been bringing it back to New Zealand for years with very good reason.
Founded in 2005 and given a significant boost thanks to TikTok fame over the past couple of years, CeraVe has emerged as the #1 dermatologist recommended moisturising brand for dry skin in the United States. Since the cult brand’s acquisition by L’Oréal in 2017, it has been gaining steadfast popularity amongst trusted dermatologists and consumers alike, with product recommendations coming thick and fast.
The brand was originally developed with dermatologists after experts noticed that many skin conditions such as dry skin, eczema and acne prone skin all had one thing in common – a deficiency in skin ceramides and in turn, a compromised skin barrier. With this issue now plaguing more and more people thanks to everything from climate change to the overuse of retinols, there has never been a better time to embrace CeraVe in all its unapologetically basic (but effective) glory.
Showcasing an advanced formulation of three essential, skin-identical ceramides with unique Multi Vesicular Emulsion (MVE®) ‘slow-release’ technology, CeraVe helps to actively restore the natural skin barrier. Ceramides are a unique form of lipid (fats) that are found naturally in between the skin cells of the stratum corneum. Making up 50 per cent of this skin barrier, ceramides are incredibly important for healthy, hydrated skin.
To understand ceramides better, think of your stratum corneum (the outermost layer of the epidermis), as a protective, wall-like structure. It is comprised of corneocytes (bricks) held in place by a defined ratio of intercellular lipids (mortar) consisting of ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids. When ceramide levels are low, the skin barrier can become weakened (imagine gaps in the cement of that brick wall), and skin can become dry, feel itchy or irritated. The formulators of CeraVe discovered that a blend of emollients and three specific ceramides (Ceramide 1, Ceramide 3 and Ceramide 6-II,) helps to replenish the barrier to promote hydrated, healthy looking skin.
CeraVe is also formulated with unique Multi Vesicular Emulsion Technology (MVE®) that gradually releases the ceramide-enriched formula over 24 hours. CeraVe’s advantage over most topical ‘quick-burst release’ formulations stems from MVE spheres composed of a series of concentric layers that trap and hold ingredients such as ceramides, fatty acids and phytosphingosine. Over time, the layers slowly and sequentially dissolve, releasing CeraVe’s ingredients. The technology allows CeraVe’s elegant textures to sustain moisture with an efficient and controlled release delivery for lasting hydration after just one use. Magic!
Perfect for right now is CeraVe Moisturising Lotion, which I’ve been using after days at the beach with great results. Formulated with a powerful combination of ceramides, hyaluronic acid, glycerine and the aforementioned MVE Delivery System, the lightweight, oil-free formulation is designed for those who prefer to use a lotion rather than a cream – so ideal for summer. Easily absorbed, yet still offering all-day hydration, it can be used all over the body, including the face. I’ve also heard great things about CeraVe Renewing SA Foot Cream, which is formulated with salicylic acid to exfoliate and moisturise dry skin patches. Supporting the protective skin barrier to promote soft, smooth tootsies, it’s next on my shopping list for sure.
CeraVe is exclusively available right now at Chemist Warehouse.
