Beauty news: welcome to the next generation Dyson Airwrap™

Launched in New Zealand three years ago, when the Dyson Airwrap™ styler landed many of us wondered how we ever lived without it. A tool engineered to create voluminous curls, natural waves and smooth blow dries without extreme heat, it delivers near-salon worthy blow waves without needing to leave the comfort of your own bathroom.
Like with any piece of Dyson technology, the Airwrap™ was borne through frustration. Dyson engineers researched current styling technologies and identified areas for improvement such as tangled hair, temperature damage, size, and weak and unruly airflow. After building state-of-the-art hair laboratories, the team spent more than six years testing and researching different hair types and styling habits around the world, creating a single tool designed to answer every problem.
At the heart of the Airwrap™ was a radical idea and hair health in mind: harness Dyson’s digital motor to create a phenomenon known as the Coanda effect. The Coanda effect occurs when a high-speed jet of air flows across a surface and due to differences in pressure, the air flow attaches itself to the surface. Taking advantage of this principle, Dyson’s team of aerodynamicists created a way to style hair using only air combined with heat. The result, whether choosing to curl, wave, smooth or simply dry hair, creates a natural look with a sleek finish, whilst helping prevent extreme heat damage to hair.

But now to the news at hand – the world’s most awarded styling tool has been radically redesigned, bringing new and reengineered attachments powered by enhanced Coanda airflow. Describing themselves as “relentlessly dissatisfied”, the team of Dyson engineers challenged their own design to miniaturise and multiply the Coanda effect, pioneering a personalisable styling tool to deliver a range of styles for different hair types, without extreme heat.
The next generation styling barrels feature a rotating cool tip, make achieving curls and waves faster and easier – with no extreme heat. Blending the results formerly achieved with two barrels into one attachment, now users can style the full head, creating clockwise and anti-clockwise curls and waves, without the need to switch attachment mid-style – how amazing is that? And great for hair professionals and those on the go.
The new release also comes with re-engineered brush attachments that deliver precision shaping with enhanced Coanda performance, alongside an all-new dual-purpose Coanda smoothing dryer. Combining two attachments in one, the Coanda smoothing dryer hides flyaways in a single pass, with no extreme heat, and transforms into a powerful dryer with the flick of a switch. Additionally, a wide-tooth comb attachment, engineered for curly and coily hair, helps to add shape, volume, and length as it dries. Dyson’s comb teeth are designed with soft curved tips to glide through the hair, with no sharp edges to catch, pull or cause damage.

So what happens if - like me – you already have an Airwrap™? For the first time, existing Airwrap™ styler owners can upgrade to these latest attachments, while retaining the original machine – love it.
The new Dyson Airwrap™ multi-styler is priced at $999 and will be available from 16 June on Dyson's New Zealand website and from 7 July in third party retailers. When purchasing from Dyson direct, new attachments are fully compatible with existing machines and owners can upgrade their full set for just $299. Owner bundles are also available in both standard and long barrels to cater for long and short hair, in true customisable Dyson style.
