Beauty review: The new, improved MAC Studio Fix Fluid SPF 15 Foundation

Following the brand's lipstick reformulation earlier this year, MAC has relaunched another of its most iconic formulas… and the original is now officially dead to me.
The product in question is MAC Studio Fix Fluid SPF 15 Foundation - an iconic MAC foundation and arguably one of the best and most loved bases on counter since the day it launched. I have worn it on and off pretty much from the moment it first dropped, and it’s a must-have in every MUA’s kit with very good reason. Studio Fix Fluid SPF 15 Foundation has had a few tweaks over the years, like a relaunch in 2016 with updated skincare ingredients, a shade range expansion in 2018, and again in 2022 to now include a staggering 71 shades, ensuring no skin tone is left out. So what’s changed this time, and why do I love it so much?

The finish
The main difference with the new formula is that it has a soft-matte finish, rather than the original super-duper matte. My now-dry, more mature skin loves this, whereas in the past my oilier self was all about that ultra matte vibe. This also makes the finish that much more flattering if you’re over 30, giving skin that is plump and glow-y in all the right places.

Key to all of the above is the fact that the latest iteration includes 87 per cent skincare ingredients, including sugar kelp extract to control oil plus red algae extract and hyaluronic acid to boost and maintain skin hydration. It also features a new Pro Fluid Technology™ that claims to “move with skin for a natural look and comfortable, lightweight wear”.
I’m not sure if the new formula it’s slightly thinner in consistency than the original but it’s definitely super blendable, which is another reason that so many makeup fans will lap it up. Easy to apply and definitely quicker? It’s a win-win.

The coverage
The finish is definitely medium coverage but buildable, so perfect for day and night and able to be built on in areas where you need a little extra help. I definitely added a little on my cheeks where my sensitivity can come to the fore with a little redness, and where a few spots of hyper pigmentation are annoying.
The new formula is similar to the NARS Light Reflecting Foundation (which I adore) as it's not a dewy coverage, but gives the skin a real lit-from-within glow that a touch of powder mutes where needed.

The packaging
The old bottle didn't have a pump or any kind of applicator - it was just simply a bottle with a lid. This caused all sorts of problems, from spillages in makeup kits to lost product. Thankfully, the new formula has also had a makeover and the new bottle comes with an easy-to-use pump that twists to lock to prevent any accidents.
I also love that the new iteration’s packaging is made from recyclable materials with 40 per cent PCR (post-consumer recycled) packaging, so kinder on the planet all round.

The takeaway
Available in 71 shades, waterproof, oil-free formula and suitable for sensitive skin, there is much to love about the new Studio Fix Fluid SPF 15 Foundation from MAC. Whether you’re a long-time fan or just looking for a new base, it is available now and comes very highly recommended.
