A Chappell Roan how-to, as HALF MAGIC arrives in New Zealand

“What if Paris Hilton and James St. James or Walt Cassidy became one and put on a drag show?” That’s what pop singer Chappell Roan has said of the inspiration behind her Coachella Weekend 1 uber glam, which was painted by makeup artist extraordinaire Donni Davy, whose unabashedly cool makeup line, Half Magic is now available at MECCA. “Donni’s beauty looks are very up my alley and her brand, Half Magic, was the first to take me seriously as an artist,” the baby star told Vogue. “It meant a lot that they believed in me, so it is so cool to have Donni do this, it feels very full circle.”
To get Roan's signature drag-inspired look, Davy kicked off proceedings by applying a face full of Haus Labs Triclone Skin Tech foundation (one of my personal fave formulas) in shade 000 Fair. From there, the superstar MUA added in details that paid homage to genre-breaking beauty icons like Boy George,’80s punks, and American drag queen and burlesque performer, Violet Chachki. She even applied a line of rhinestones on Chappell's lower lashes using her own Half Magic self-adhesive Face Gems. “I painted her lashes white so they disappeared and then redrew a fake lower lash line one fourth of an inch below her real lash line which I then lined with fake lashes” Davy told Vogue. “Her eyes looked almost cartoon, but super elevated.”

Donni Davy

Founder Davy is best known for her work as Euphoria's Head Makeup Artist, and the two-time Emmy award-winner has been credited with sparking a “Gen Z Beauty Movement” that shows. no signs of slowing down. With #euphoriamakeup sitting at 2.5 billion views on TikTok, Davy launched HALF MAGIC in response to the enormous impact the looks she created had on pop culture. Established in 2022, HALF MAGIC set out from day one to empower individuals to express their unique beauty with confidence and style, fusing the realms of beauty and entertainment and inviting everyone to “become the star of their own captivating story”.
“Half Magic is the answer to countless DMs asking me how to layer glitter and colour,” says Davy. “I wanted to provide fun, user-friendly products and tools all in one place for people to not just create the looks I’m known for, but also to bring sparkle and joy into every day. We have so many passionate Half Magic and Euphoria fans in Australia and New Zealand. I couldn’t be more excited to finally share Half Magic with them in person, and to be able to partner with MECCA to make makeup fun again, is an absolute dream.”
Drawing from her experience as a professional industry artist, Davy recognised that one-size-fits-all palettes neither cater to everyone nor address environmental concerns. With this, Davy created HALF MAGIC’s innovative richly pigmented single eyeshadows encased in compact, compostable containers made from PaperFoam, allowing users to personalise their palette by mixing and matching shades to their liking.
“It's incredibly fulfilling to witness our iconic, viral products like Glitterpuck pressed fairy dust, Magic Flik liquid eyeliner pen and the wing guide makeup tool, Wing Magician, attracting new users across digital platforms by actually making makeup easier and joyful,” said Michelle Liu, General Manager of Half Magic. “MECCA is the #1 beauty destination for our digitally native consumer, and the perfect partner to help us sprinkle a little magic into every beauty lover’s makeup bag."
