Stolen Girlfriends Club brings back the mood crystal
Back in 1970s, mood rings really were a mood all their own. Featuring gemstones that were usually made of either glass or quartz, they were lauded for their mystic powers promising to reveal your true feelings at any given time – and yes, you HAD to have one.
Their powers pretty much came down to the fact that the glass or quartz “stones" were actually hollow shells filled with liquid crystals. These special crystals were thermochromic, which means they would change colour in response to any changes in temperature. These changes in temperature — either air temperature or body temperature — would cause the liquid crystals to twist, and when they twisted, they would reflect different wavelengths of light. This would cause the colour of the “stone" itself to change, and minds to be collectively blown.

Mood rings then made a comeback with a vengeance in the 1990s, and along with colour-changing lipstick and nail polish they featured heavily in pop culture and were huge with those leaning into a vintage, trippy vibe. Fast forward to 2025 and Stolen Girlfriends Club is bringing back the power of the mood crystal, but with an absolutely beautiful, fine jewellery twist. Meet: the iconic Love Claw Collection in Mood Crystal.
Originally introduced in 2010, the Love Claw series has become a hallmark collection for the Aotearoa-based brand. Featuring beautifully faceted gemstones gripped by fierce, sculptural claws, these pieces make powerful statements that transcend gender. The overall aesthetic is a collision of serenity and severity, something pure and precious, protected by a stronger force.
The newest iteration of the Love Claw collection debuts the Mood Crystal - a playful yet nostalgic reimagining of the iconic 1970s and 1990s mood ring. Inspired by the wearer’s emotional state and all that comes with it, like the legendary 70s piece the Mood Crystal is a dynamic, colour-changing gemstone, which shifts in response to the wearer's temperature and mood changes.
Stolen Girlfriends Club has seamlessly layered natural, clear crystal with a thermochromic liquid that changes hues based on temperature fluctuations driven by the feelings and mood of the wearer, which when paired with the collection’s signature claw setting is really something special. Introducing a new, unique dimension to a beloved classic and available in solid sterling silver and 18k gold plating, this collection combines the best of nostalgia with modern craftsmanship and I’m here for it.
